The Rio California-Tijuana aqueduct is the main supplier of water to the Baja California region but has begun having difficulty meeting demand.

On March 24th plans for a solution to this problem were realized at a groundbreaking ceremony for the largest desalination plant in Latin America. The plant, located in Playas de Rosarito, is expected to supply 75% of the water currently sourced from the aqueduct once fully operational in three years time. Residents of Rosarito and Tijuana will be able to use this high-quality water in their homes and fields with none slated for sale abroad.

The plant has been privately funded at a cost of US$ 540 million.It will remain privately operated by a  for 37 years after which time it will become the property of the state.
